CHAPTER 6

Summer Thunder

The sound of a shallow running river flowing around sun dry rocks stretching their arms up toward a starry night filled Cassidy's heart with a sweet calmness. Yes, the night she was engulfed in was hot and filled with the sound of a buzzing heat, but the heat seemed mild and tame—at peace with the lazy flowing river. Standing behind the river a sleepy little Texas town yawned and tucked itself in for bed. This part of the world is my home. This little town is my home. This community is my home. I want to grow old and die here. I can't imagine living anywhere else. I was almost...ran off by an ugly snake. God surely has been kind to me.

“Mom?”

“Huh?” Cassidy turned her head. Charlie was sitting next to her on a wooden park bench stationed close to the river. “Yes, honey?”

“You haven't said very much since supper?”

“Oh...well, when my tummy is full of steak I get sleepy,” Cassidy smiled a smile that appeared exhausted but content. “I've been doing a lot of thinking.”

Charlie watched his mother sit her hands down onto the lap of a soft yellow dress that complimented her beauty the way a soft rain drop compliments a tender rose pedal. Only if Lincoln was around to see how pretty Cassidy looked. But now...Lincoln was back at the ranch with Jack. “About you and Lincoln? Are you two going to...break up?”

“Oh no, honey, I don't think so.” Cassidy glanced up. A beautiful half moon was perched in the starry sky. “I see the constellation Leo. Leo is my favorite constellation. I happen to know Gemini is your favorite constellation. Mae loves Pisces and Riley has always liked Orion.”

“Mom, you're dodging my question,” Charlie groaned. “You know as well as I do that grandpa taught us the what all the constellations are and how to spot them in the night sky.”

Cassidy simply sighed. Charlie was clever. “I suppose I am dodging your question, honey. I'm really not in the mood to talk about Lincoln right now.”

“But you guys are engaged to get hitched...be husband and wife.” A worried expression spread across Charlie's shadowy face. “Here I am dressed in my best shirt and pair of pants...for nothing. I thought tonight was going to be a good night. You and Riley fussed after supper...who knows where Riley walked off to--”

“Riley will simmer down.”

“Yeah...I guess. But he was right, mom,” Charlie moved forward. “You shouldn't have snapped at Lincoln the way you did.”

Cassidy sighed again. “I suppose you're right...and so is Riley. I was very harsh with Lincoln...because my patience is worn thin. Charlie, I know the ranch isn't everything, but the ranch is our home. I'm taking the rest of the week off to catch my breath and rest...but come Monday I'm going to wake up before the sun and pour my heart into the ranch. I'm never going to stop. And I know you will join me. Lincoln...I know he meant well suggesting we all take a vacation, but now isn't the time.
